Shiri was kidnapped from her home in Nir Oz along with her two small children—Ariel (4) and baby Kfir (9 months). A video of Shiri, terrified, wrapping her two children in a blanket while being led to the Gaza Strip by Hamas terrorists became one of the defining images of war and terror. Another video showed her husband, Yarden, being led by terrorists into Gaza.

The terrorists' cameras recorded the break-in at the Bibas family home, where they forced the door open with a screwdriver. Yarden Bibas told his sister, "They broke into our house, it feels like the end. I'm scared to death, I have guns, and they have automatic weapons." Shiri’s parents, Yossi and Margit Silverman, were murdered.

Shiri worked in the kibbutz's accounting department and had previously cared for the kibbutz's children.

Shiri was murdered while in Hamas captivity, and her body was returned to Israel as part of the Hostage-Ceasefire deal in February 2025, after Hamas first returned the body of an anonymous Gazan woman who they claimed was Shiri.
